A class action settlement covers owners of buildings in the United States and Canada with CertainTeed Organic Asphalt Shingles made from July 1, 1987 through 2005 that show premature deterioration likely caused by a product defect. The court approved the settlement in 2010 and it took effect in October 2010, and CertainTeed has been processing and paying claims. Many claim deadlines have already passed. Right now, only building owners whose shingles are still under warranty can make a claim. If you bought a building with these shingles from someone other than the builder or original purchaser, contact CertainTeed before filing to check whether your claim is still valid. Cash payments are available to qualifying owners. To claim, you must file a timely claim form and meet the definition of an Eligible Claimant. You can download a claim form from the website's Case Documents section or request one by mail through the site. The website also offers a payment calculator and guidance on identifying whether your roof has these shingles.
We're not a law firm; the official settlement site has the final word.
