If you owned or still own a UL life insurance policy issued or administered by Brighthouse Life Insurance Company in any of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory, you may be part of a $9.25 million class action settlement. The lawsuit claims Brighthouse failed to lower cost of insurance rates even though its mortality expectations improved and its expenses fell, so policyholders paid more for certain charges than they should have. Brighthouse denies the allegations but agreed to settle. To qualify, your policy must contain specific language about basing rates on future outlook for mortality and expenses and must have been in force as of April 6, 2021, under the applicable statute of limitations. Eligible members receive a cash payment automatically without filing a claim. Payments are reduced by administration costs, a service award, and class counsel's fees. If you do not want to be included, you can opt out by December 11, 2026. Objections are due December 23, 2026, and the court's fairness hearing is January 26, 2027.
We're not a law firm; the official settlement site has the final word.
