How we rank

Cards are ranked by cash value: the sign-up bonus, times what one point or mile is worth, minus the first-year annual fee (nothing is taken off when the fee is waived the first year). Only the sign-up bonus counts; everyday earning rates, travel credits and other perks are on each card's page but are not part of the number. Cards worth the same go by the lower spend needed, then the lower annual fee, then by name, and a spend the bank's page does not state goes after the ones it does. A card whose points have no value set yet shows "value not estimated" and is listed after the cards that have one.

What we count one point or mile as: the value anyone can get without transfer partners or award-chart tricks, such as cash, a statement credit, or booking through the bank's or program's own fixed-rate option.
