Have fun sharing with me my most memorable birthday celebration. My husband and I rode down the Grand Canyon on mules. We arrived at Phantom Ranch on the very bottom, and waiting for me was a sheet cake with a big piece missing and stuck in thecakewas a half burnt green candle. Those that hicked down and fellow mule riders stood and sang Happy Birthday to me. I thanked them all for attending my party.
The year was 1972. I read about a restaurant which was opening atop the World Trade Center. The Hill family budget had become strained so as a stay-at-home mom of four teenage children I found it necessary to seek employment. This I found as a secretary at a university across the Hudson River from Manhattan. I had been out of the work force for too many years and changes had taken place–electric typewriters for example. Wow! Did those keys move fast!! However, with the aid of a rental machine and practice this obstacle was conquered and I got the job. One day i thouht–wouldn’t it be great to celebrate my birthday atop the tallest building in New York. I whisked out a piece of stationary and wrote to make a reservation. On June 9 the Hill family and a few friends went to new York. Two elevators speeded us to the top. We passed through a hall of mirrors into the restaurant where the view of lower Manhattan and the Empire State Building uptown was breathtaking. I have wondered whether the letterhead of the stationary was instrumental in securing a table with a view. It was an elegant evening. It is with mixed feelings that I now reflect on that birthday experience but saddened by the knowledge that Windows on the World no longer exists, except as a memory.
For many years,I have been making homemade versions of Jeopardy to play at family &friend holiday gatherings, but I am never able to play because I know all the answers. To my suprise, for my 50th birthday my female neighbors put together an elegant dinner party and invited my 3 oldest friends from high school, and the evening concluded with a Jeopardy game about me(they even sang the theme song)it was one of the nicest gifts I have ever recieved!
